This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

The uncalled, a novel Paul Laurence Dunbar Books Reviews
This book was so unexpected in it's storyline. It is not often that an author writes from a perspective that is outside his own living experience; without creating any spoilers, I must say that the prose itself is almost poetry with a smattering of 'wise words' of admonition within. Thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed and would highly recommend.
Mr. Dunbar tells a story filled with human faults and judgments. Sometimes sad and often comedic we follow the main character, Frederick Brent from a motherless child to an adult. The author captures the struggles of Freddie as he grows up in a small town where everyone knows him and his ancestry. I appreciate the single lady Miss Prime for taking him in to raise. I rather enjoyed the gossiping old ladies Ms. Martin and Mrs. Smith.
Mrs. Warren was a true character watching the house during the funeral and looking to see if there was anything worth taking.
Beside Freddie, Eliphalet Hodges was the balancing act between him and aunt Hester.. (Miss Prime-Hodges.)His and Miss Prime's relationship was an interesting story in its self.Freddie was finally able to break away from the small town notwithstanding the orders
from the elderly pastor and father of his girlfriend Elizabeth concerning his running the church and how to preach his sermons. I was pleased with how the story ended as Freddie was seeking his freedom and no matter what he would become all he would ever be was " Old Tom Brent's boy" from Dexter to the town's people. So sad and so true.
